How to cook and serve Chinkali: a guide to juicy filled dumplings

Chinkali are cooked straight from the freezer in boiling salted water. For the varieties currently offered by Frostix, the instructions are to bring about 5 litres of water and 1 teaspoon of salt to the boil, add the frozen dumplings while stirring, and stir gently from time to time. Once they float to the surface, cook them for about another 8–10 minutes. Lift them out and, if desired, brush them with melted butter.

This guide follows the product information currently published by Frostix. Always check the instructions on the specific product page and packaging before cooking, as those directions apply to your exact item.

Which Chinkali work with this method?

Start with a frozen variety that carries the corresponding boiling instructions. Frostix currently offers:

All three are currently listed as frozen products. Ingredients, allergens, pack sizes and availability differ, so compare the current product cards before choosing.

How to cook Chinkali step by step

1. Prepare a large pot

Add about 5 litres of water and 1 teaspoon of salt to a large pot and bring it fully to the boil. A roomy pot makes gentle stirring easier.

2. Add the Chinkali while frozen

Take them from the freezer immediately before cooking. Add them frozen to the boiling water while stirring. Defrosting first is not part of this published method.

3. Stir gently from time to time

Stir with particular care just after adding them. Use a wooden spoon or slotted spoon and move the dumplings without piercing the dough.

4. Cook for 8–10 minutes after they float

Watch the Chinkali as they cook. Once they float to the surface, start the time stated in the product information and cook for about another 8–10 minutes. Follow your packaging if it gives different directions.

5. Lift out and serve immediately

Lift each dumpling out with a slotted spoon and let excess water drain briefly. Place them on a serving platter rather than tipping them into a colander. The product instructions suggest adding melted butter. Serve warm.

How to keep the juicy filling inside

  • Do not pierce them: use a spoon or slotted spoon instead of a fork.
  • Move them gently: stir only enough to keep the dumplings moving freely.
  • Serve straight away: lift them out individually and bring them to the table without a long wait.

The thicker dough knot at the top is a useful place to hold the dumpling carefully. When eating, take a small bite from the side first so that the liquid inside does not escape all at once.

Simple serving ideas

Melted butter is already included in the published serving recommendation. Keep other accompaniments simple:

  • freshly ground black pepper;
  • a spoonful of sour cream;
  • fresh herbs served separately;
  • a leafy salad or crisp vegetables.

Serve sauces on the side so everyone can choose their own amount. For a family meal, place the Chinkali on a large central platter and offer butter, pepper and sour cream in small bowls.

Common cooking mistakes

Defrosting the dumplings first

The checked product instructions say to add the Chinkali to boiling water while frozen. Prepare the pot first and only then take the product from the freezer.

Starting the timer too early

The stated 8–10 minutes begin once the Chinkali float, not immediately after they enter the water.

Lifting them with a fork

A fork can damage the wrapper. A slotted spoon supports each dumpling from below and drains the water at the same time.

Using directions for a different dumpling

Pelmeni, Wareniki, Manty and Chinkali differ in size, shape and preparation. See the guide to Pelmeni, Wareniki and Manti differences for a quick overview. For Chinkali, the specific product instructions remain decisive.
